French archaeologist and ethnologist. Born in Paris, he was a professor at the University of Lyon and the University of Paris, and has been a professor at the Collège de France since 1969. From 1945 to 1963, he conducted highly scientific excavations at Arcy-sur-Cure, a group of cave ruins in northern France. He presented a unique theory of androgynous mythology by conducting detailed research and analysis of the relationship between the themes of these Paleolithic cave paintings and the topography inside the caves. In other words, he asserted that all the animals and symbols that appear in the paintings are organized into meaningful groups, and that all the animals and symbols are masculine or feminine symbols, which are contrasted to complement each other. According to him, the entire cave is a true metaphysical system, a mythological system based on the contrast between male and female.

フランスの考古学者，民族学者。パリに生まれ，リヨン大学教授，パリ大学教授を経て，1969年よりコレージュ･ド･フランス教授。1945‐63年には，フランス北部の洞窟遺跡群アルシー･シュル･キュールArcy‐sur‐Cureにおいて，きわめて科学的な発掘調査を行った。彼は，これら旧石器時代洞窟壁画の主題と洞窟内の地形との関連を詳細に調査分析することによって，ユニークな〈男女両性神話説〉を提出した。すなわち，壁画にあらわれる動物や記号はすべて意味のあるグループとして組織されていること，そしてすべての動物と記号は男性的象徴もしくは女性的象徴であって，それらは互いに補足しあうように対置されていること，を主張したもので，彼によると洞窟全体は真の形而上学的体系であり，男女両性の対置にもとづく神話的体系であるとされる。
