Oshiro Shogi

Japanese: 御城将棋 - おしろしょうぎ

From Kyoho 1 (1716) to Bunkyu 1 (1861), every year on November 17th, the same day as Gojo Go, a shogi match was held in front of the Tokugawa Shogun between the three head families (the Ohashi family, the branch family, and the Ito family) at Nakaoku Goguro Shoin. During the Keicho era (1596-1615), the Shogi-sho (families who served the Edo Shogunate with shogi) was established and matches in front of the Shogun were already being held, but it seems appropriate to consider the start of Gojo Shogi in Kyoho 1 when systems such as game dates and pre-playing (playing in advance) were established.

享保1 (1716) ～文久1 (1861) 年，毎年御城碁と同じ 11月 17日に徳川将軍の御前，中奥御黒書院において家元三家 (大橋本家・分家，伊藤家) で行われた将棋の御前試合。慶長年間 (1596～1615) に将棋所 (江戸幕府に将棋をもって仕えた家系) ができて，御前試合はすでに行われていたが，対局日や下指し (あらかじめ指しておく) などの制度が整った享保1年を御城将棋の始りとするのが妥当であろう。
