majnūn (English spelling)

...The common view of the jinn is that they are spirits that share the same living space as humans, are mischievous, and sometimes even cause death to humans, and that their leader is Iblis (one of Satans), and they are particularly feared. A person possessed by a jinn is called a majnūn, and the word later came to be used exclusively to mean a madman, but the characteristics of the person vary depending on the type of jinn possessed. A common characteristic of a majnūn is said to be eloquence and versatility, and poets, singers, shrine maidens, fortune tellers, and preachers were believed to be contacted by spirits.
