...Later, natural history came to be called Gechi (the book Gechi Mirror Original was compiled during the Qing Dynasty), and in the second half of the 19th century, when Western science and technology entered China, the terms Gechi and Gekbutsu were also used for science, and the production techniques for warships and guns were called Geigei and Seizo. Also, the American W.A.P. Martin used the Chinese name Ding Liang to refer to his general book on natural science, Gekbutsu Nyumon (Introduction to Gekbutsu) (1868), and the first science college in China was called Gechi Academy (founded in 1875). In Japan, the term Kyouri (practice) seems to have been used rather than Kyouri or Gekchi (Hoashi Mari's Kyouri Tsu, etc.)....

…のちに，博物学は格致と呼ばれるようになり(清代に《格致鏡原》という本が編まれている)，19世紀後半，欧米の科学技術が中国に入ってきたとき，科学にもまた格致や格物という語があてられ，軍艦や鉄砲などの生産技術は伎芸や製造と呼ばれた。また，アメリカのW.A.P.マーティンは，丁韙良（ていいりよう）という中国名で自然科学の概説書《格物入門》(1868)をあらわしたし，中国における最初の理科専門学校の名は格致書院(1875創設)であった。日本では格物･格致より窮理の語が用いられたようである(帆足万里《窮理通》など)。…
