It has a history dating back to the 9th century, and views vary by denomination; for example, the Roman Catholic Church's doctrine is transubstantiation, while Luther accepts the change but holds that the nature remains, preaching the theory of the coexistence of substance, and Zwingli preaches the symbolic theory of change. This debate is unique to Christianity, which considers the mystical nature of the Eucharist to be the core of practical faith.

〈聖餐論争〉ともいい，英語ではEucharistic controversy。キリスト教のミサにおいてキリストの体と血として拝領されるパンとブドウ酒が形質の変化をとげているのか否か，あるいは変化をとげた両者が物質としての本質をとどめるか否かをめぐってなされた論争。９世紀以来の歴史があり，ローマ・カトリック教会はその〈全質変化〉を教義とし，ルターは変化は認めるものの形質は残存するとの〈実体共存説〉を，ツウィングリは変化の象徴説を説くなど，教派により見解は多様である。聖餐の秘儀性を実践的信仰の核心と考えるキリスト教ならではの論争。
