A marathon runner. Born in Tamana-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School. One of two participants in the 5th Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912 (Meiji 45), the first time a Japanese athlete participated in the Olympic Games. He withdrew from the marathon after 15 kilometers, but participated in a total of three times, at the Antwerp Games in 1920 (Taisho 9) (16th place) and the Paris Games in 1924 (withdrew midway). He is an indispensable figure in the history of Japanese marathons. During this time, he ran from Shimonoseki to Tokyo, and from Karafuto to Tokyo, among other routes. He served as chairman of the Kumamoto Prefectural Board of Education and president of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. In 1955 (Showa 30), he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon for his contributions to the education and sports world.
