A general term for planktonic shellfish belonging to the Cavolinidae family, or one of these. Although they are snail shellfish, their shells are not coiled, but are thin and shaped like a turtle's shell. When alive, they swim with large, flat, lateral legs that look like wings on either side, hence the name "sea butterfly" or "pteropod." They are found in temperate and tropical waters around the world, and in Japan there are five species, including the largest of these, Cavolinia tridentata (illustration).
