A valve installed at the main seawater intake of a ship. In diesel ships, seawater is taken in to cool the cooling water for the diesel engine, and in turbine ships, seawater is taken in to cool the boiler condenser. When steamships were invented, a pump was used to suck up seawater from the bottom of the ship to cool the condenser, and a valve was installed so that this pump could also be used to drain water in the event of flooding, but the origin of the name is unknown.
