Solidago altissima - Solidago altissima

Solidago altissima - Solidago altissima

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The stem is erect and can reach a height of 2-3 meters. Runnels sprout from the base of the stem in all directions, and new seedlings are produced at the tips of these, so it is easy to form large colonies. In October and November, it produces many yellow flower heads in a large panicle. A naturalized plant native to North America, it often forms large colonies on riverbanks and wastelands adjacent to urban areas. It has been said to be a plant that causes pollen allergies, but since this species is not wind-pollinated and pollen does not float in the air, it is unlikely that it causes pollen allergies. S. gigantea Ait. var. leiophylla Fernald, which has almost no hairs on its stems and leaves, looks very similar to S. gigantea, but it flowers earlier, from July to September.
