Kashima Nishiki

Japanese: 鹿島錦 - かしまにしき
Kashima Nishiki
A regional brand of Kyushu, Okinawa region, and Saga prefecture.
It is produced in Kashima City. Kashima Nishiki originated about 180 years ago. It began when the wife of the lord of Kashima Nabeshima was captivated by the interesting mesh pattern on the ceiling as she gazed upon it from her sickbed, and ordered her aides to see if it could be used in everyday items. It is made by cutting slits in special foil paper using gold, silver and lacquer to create the warp threads, and weaving silk threads as the weft. The designs include flowers, letters and patterns. It is a traditional local product of Saga Prefecture.
