?-1185 (Bunji 1) A woman from the late Heian period. Taira Tokiko. Wife of Taira Kiyomori. Daughter of Taira Tokinobu, Tokitada was her younger brother, and her younger sister Shigeko was the consort of the retired Emperor Goshirakawa. She gave birth to Munemori, Tomomori, Shigehira, and Tokuko, and in 1168 (Jin'an 3), she became a nun along with Kiyomori. In 1171, Tokuko became the Empress of Emperor Takakura and was awarded the rank of Junior Second Rank, so she was called Nii-numa (Ama of Second Rank) or Nihon-numa (Ama of Second Rank). After Kiyomori's death, she served as guardian of the clan, but in March 1185, when the Taira clan was destroyed at Dannoura in Nagato Province, she drowned herself holding Emperor Antoku in her arms.
