A form of entertainment in which one imitates the voices of others, a modern variation of kowairo (vocal tone). The term was first used at the end of the Taisho period, and is believed to have been coined by the comedian Furukawa Roppa. Later, with the development of radio, the number of entertainers who specialized in this increased, and new directing techniques were developed, such as making the whole performance into a stand-up comedy routine, or creating a plot in which various characters appear. Whereas traditional vocal tones were primarily used to imitate the delivery of lines by Kabuki actors, this has a wider range, and especially after World War II, it began to include people from various fields such as politicians and critics. Also, pop vocal imitations, which specialize in imitating the vocal cords of singers, became popular.
