Shen Congwen

Chinese author. Born in Fenghuang County, Hunan Province. His real name is Shen Yuehuan. His grandmother was a Miao. At the age of 15, he joined the military of a warlord and fought in various places in Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, and Guizhou Provinces. At the age of 20, he went to Beijing, and in 1927, he gained recognition for his autobiographical novel After Joining the Army. He then moved to Shanghai, where he edited magazines such as Red and Black with Hu Yepin and Ding Ling, and also belonged to the New Moon School, writing dozens of works such as Huiming, Huu, and Lamp. In 1934, he became known abroad for Border City, a story of pure and sweet tragic love, but was criticized by left-wing literary circles as a "writer without ideology." In 1938, he released the first volume of his unfinished masterpiece, The Long River, in Hong Kong, but it was censored by the Kuomintang authorities in China and was finally published in 1948 with significant edits. After liberation, he was criticized for his bourgeois tendencies and in 1951 he ceased writing. He subsequently worked at the China Museum of History (now the National Museum of China) and the Palace Museum, engaged in archaeological research, and in 1980 published the extensive Study of Chinese Costume Throughout the Ages. He also worked at the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He has published the 12 volumes of Shen Congwen's Collected Works (1982-85).

中国の作家。湖南(こなん／フーナン)省鳳凰(ほうおう)県出身。本名は沈岳煥。祖母はミャオ族。15歳で軍閥の軍隊に入り、四川(しせん／スーチョワン)、湖南、湖北(こほく／フーペイ)、貴州(きしゅう／コイチョウ)省の各地を転戦。20歳のとき北京(ペキン)へ出、1927年、自伝的小説『入隊以後』で認められる。その後上海(シャンハイ)に移り、胡也頻(こやひん／フーイエピン)、丁玲(ていれい／ティンリン)と『紅黒』などの雑誌を編集するかたわら、新月派にも属し、『会明』『夫』『ランプ』など数十編に上る作品を書く。34年には清純甘美な悲恋を描いた『辺城』で国外にもその名を知られるが、左翼文壇からは「思想のない作家」と批判される。38年、未完の大作『長河』第1巻を香港(ホンコン)で発表するが、国内では国民党当局の検閲にあい、大幅に削除して48年にようやく出版される。解放後はブルジョア主義的傾向を批判され、51年、創作の筆を絶つ。その後は中国歴史博物館（現中国国家博物館）、故宮博物院に勤務、考古学の研究に従事し、80年には大部な『中国歴代服飾研究』を出版。中国社会科学院歴史研究所に勤務。『沈従文文集』全12巻（1982～85）が出版されている。
