Born: June 17, 1808 in Christiansson [Died] July 12, 1845, Christiania (now Oslo) A Norwegian poet. Born to a pastor, he studied theology at university, but was also interested in botany, history, and medicine, and was passionate about fighting and love, becoming a leader of the younger generation at an early age. At the time, Norway had finally won independence, but its culture had become Danish due to its long rule by Denmark. In the midst of a heated debate about how to develop Norway's culture, Skabelsen, in contrast to the poet Welhaven, who advocated cooperation with Denmark, emphasized the development of an original culture based on the great traditions of ancient Norway, and made a passionate argument. He toured the country giving lectures to awaken patriotism and educate the people, and was loved by the entire nation and revered as the national poet. His masterpiece, Creation, Man, Savior (1830), is a grand epic poem that is permeated with a bright belief in the future of humanity. Other works include "Flowers of Jan van Huysum" (40), "Jøden" (42), and "The English Pilot" (44). The female writer C. Colette is his younger sister.
