...A type of colored woodblock print in which two or more (usually four to six) plates of shades of a single color or several shades of a similar color are used to create a light and dark effect. In Germany, it was made by Cranach and Burgkmair in 1507-10, and separately in Italy, Ugo da Carpi (c. 1450-c. 1527) applied for a patent in Venice in 1516. Many of the German-style prints had plates of only light and dark added to the finished image, and these were also called camaieus. ...

...At the end of the 18th century, the Englishman Bewick succeeded in woodblock illustrations, which made it possible to produce images as intricate as copperplate prints, and by combining small pieces of wood, the size could be freely adjusted, and they were used to illustrate newspapers, magazines, books, etc. In the early 16th century, color prints were produced in Germany and Alsace using four to seven woodblocks (grain), called camaille or chiaroscuro, which express shading, and the names of Hugo da Carpi (1450-1520) of Venice are well known.
