Generally, it refers to a place where many chestnut trees grow. The Harima no Kuni Fudoki states about Kurisu Village in Ibo County, "The Emperor of Takatsunomiya in Naniwa bestowed chestnuts issued by imperial decree to Ikeko of the Wakawabe clan. So he retreated and wanted to breed in this village. That is why it is called Kurisu." Examples of Kurisu include Tahara Mikurusu in Tsuzugi County, Yamashiro Province, Kurisuno in Atago County, Okurusu in Uji County, Mikurusu in Tanba, Kurisu in Oshimi County, Yamato Province, Kurisu in Muro County, and Kurisu in Kusa County of the same name. Kurisu has been noted historically because it had the same meaning as Mikuriya, as a place where chestnuts were offered to the Emperor or shrines.
