The Tales of Hoffmann - Les contes d'Hoffmann

The Tales of Hoffmann - Les contes d'Hoffmann

An opera by French composer Offenbach. It has three acts with a prologue and epilogue. The libretto is by J. Barbier and M. Carré, based on a novel by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It is an omnibus-style work in which the protagonist Hoffmann introduces three fantastic novels as his own love stories. The first act is the story of a man who falls in love with the automaton Olympia, taken from "The Sleeping Spirit" in "Night Scenes." The second act is the story of Julietta, a courtesan who ruins men, based on "The Shadow of the Mirror" in "New Year's Eve." The third act is the story of Antonia, a sickly young lady who loves to sing, based on "Counselor Crespel" in "Tales of the Serapion." Offenbach's music fully utilizes the mysterious character of the original work, while adding his own light and witty flavor to it, and the opera as a whole is rich in beautiful melodies, and the Barcarolle (Barcarolle) sung in the second act in particular is so famous that it is often sung on its own as "Hoffmann's Barcarolle." Although part of the opera was left unfinished after the composer's death in 1880, it was completed by Ernest Guiraud (1837-92) and premiered in Paris in 1881.
