Acetylide - Acetylide (English spelling)

Acetylide - Acetylide (English spelling)

A general term for salt-like compounds of metal carbides that have triple bonds (acetylene bonds). They are also called acetylene compounds. Representative compounds include those of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, copper(I), silver, and gold(I). For example, sodium carbide (Na 2 C 2 ), silver carbide (silver acetylenide) (Ag 2 C 2 ), and calcium carbide (CaC 2 ) can be obtained by heating metallic sodium in an acetylene stream, passing acetylene through an aqueous solution of silver salt, or igniting lime and carbon. Copper carbide(I) (Cu 2 C 2 ) is a red powder, copper carbide(II) (CuC 2 ) is a dark brown powder, and gold carbide(I) (Au 2 C 2 ) is a yellow powder. The rest are colorless solids. In water, they are often hydrolyzed to produce acetylene. Sodium and copper(I) compounds are important in organic synthesis.
