Suicide in heaven - Shinjuten no Amijima

Japanese: 心中天の網島 - しんじゅうてんのあみじま

Joruri. Domestic drama. Three volumes. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in 1720. It is an adaptation of the double suicide of Kamiya Jihei and Kinokuniya Koharu that occurred in the same year. Set against the backdrop of the commercial city of Osaka, Jihei, who has a wife and children but frequently visits the prostitute Koharu, and Jihei's wife Osan and Koharu, who overcome their hatred and feel a sense of obligation between them, the psychology and personalities of the characters are beautifully portrayed, making this work one of Chikamatsu's greatest works. Many adaptations were made afterwards, but the most well-known is the collaboration between Chikamatsu Hanji and others, Shinju Kamiya Jihei (commonly known as Kawasho), which was written in 1778, and its supplement, Shigure no Kotatsu, was also written. Currently, in Bunraku and Kabuki, in addition to the original work, adaptations of the first volume, Kawasho, and the middle volume, Shigure no Kotatsu, are also performed.

浄瑠璃。世話物。3巻。近松門左衛門作。享保5 (1720) 年大坂竹本座初演。同年に起きた紙屋治兵衛と紀伊国屋小春との心中事件を脚色。商業都市大坂を背景に，妻子ある身で遊女小春に通いつめる治兵衛，憎しみをこえて女同士の義理を感じ合う治兵衛の妻おさんと小春など，登場人物の心理，性格もみごとに描かれ，近松の最高傑作といわれる。その後多くの改作が生れたが，特に安永7 (78) 年近松半二ら合作『心中紙屋治兵衛』 (通称『河庄』) が最も知られ，その増補『時雨の炬燵 (こたつ) 』も書かれた。現在，文楽や歌舞伎では，原作による上演のほか，これら上の巻「河庄」と中の巻「時雨の炬燵」の改作も上演される。
