A turtle of the Testudinidae family, the largest land turtle. It is called a giant tortoise because the shape of its limbs and the skin on its neck resemble those of an elephant. There are two extant species: the Aldabra giant tortoise, Geochelone gigantea (Aldabra giant tortoise) (illustration), found on the Seychelles and Aldabra islands in the Indian Ocean, and the Galapagos giant tortoise, G. elephantopus (Galapagos giant tortoise) (illustration), found on the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
