A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family that grows in colonies on slightly damp slopes such as along mountain streams, and is said to be closely related to woody plants such as the Hydrangea genus (illustration). The underground stems are thick and woody, spreading horizontally, while the aboveground stems are erect and unbranched, 40-70 cm tall. The leaves are stalked and opposite, with elliptical or obovate leaf blades 10-20 cm long and 6-12 cm wide, and the stems are wedge-shaped, with two lobes at the tip, forming a forked tail, and the edges have small and large sharp sawtooth edges. In July and August, the stems bear a dozen or so flowers in a corymb, but when young, the inflorescences are spherical, wrapped in several bracts.

山の沢沿いなどのやや湿った斜面に群生するユキノシタ科の多年草で，木本性のアジサイ属などに近縁な植物といわれる（イラスト）。地下茎は木質で太く，横にはい，地上茎は直立して分枝せず，高さ40～70cm。葉には柄があって対生し，葉身は楕円形または倒卵形で，長さ10～20cm，幅6～12cm，茎部はくさび形，先端は2裂して二叉（にさ）の尾状となり，ふちには大小の鋭い鋸歯がある。7～8月，茎の先に十数個の花を散房状につけるが，若い時には，花序は数個の苞に包まれて球状の形をしている。
