Onishi Jogen

...A kettle maker in the early Edo period. The second generation of the Onishi family, and the younger brother of the first generation Jorin (one theory says they were relatives). Commonly known as Gorozaemon. He is considered the best of the Onishi family. He learned kettle making from kettle maker Nagoshi Mitsumasa (one theory says his younger brother Iemasa), and was favored by tea masters Furuta Oribe and Kobori Enshu. His style was thin and often sand-skinned. There were few haochi (feathered edges), and many kekiri (cutting edges). Normally, the skin is not applied to the ring, but Josei carefully applied the skin to the ring as well, creating a beautiful kettle overall. In addition to tea kettles, he also made the copper lighthouse in front of Daiyuin Temple in Nikko and the temple bell at Tokai-ji Temple in Shinagawa. ...

…江戸初期の釜師。大西家の2世で，初世浄林の弟(一説に親族関係)。通称五郎左衛門。大西家一番の上手とされる。釜師名越三昌(一説にその弟家昌)に釜作を学び，茶匠古田織部，小堀遠州などの愛顧を受けた。作風は薄作りを得意とし，多く砂肌。羽落（はおち）は少なく，毛切（けきり）が多い。普通，鐶付（かんつき）には肌を入れないが，浄清は鐶付にも入念に肌を入れ，総体にきれいな釜作をした。茶の湯釜のほかに日光大猷院前銅灯台，品川東海寺の梵鐘なども手がけている。…
