Suturing blood vessels. Synthetic fiber thread is used for suturing, and needles with thread (atraumatic needles) are used to minimize damage to the blood vessel wall. Vascular suturing can be done in various ways, including sidewall sutures, where the incision is sewn directly, end-to-end anastomosis, where the ends of the blood vessels are sewn together, and end-to-side anastomosis, where the end of one blood vessel is sewn to the side of the other blood vessel. In all cases, except in special cases, continuous sutures are used. The basic principles of suturing are to use as few stitches as possible to prevent blood leakage, and to take care to accurately match the intima to the intima.

血管を縫い合わせること。縫合には合成繊維の糸が用いられ，血管壁に与える損傷を最少にするために糸つきの針(無傷針)が用いられている。血管縫合には切開部をそのまま縫う側壁縫合，血管の端と端を縫う端々吻合（ふんごう），一方の血管の側面に他方の血管の端を縫合する端側吻合などがあるが，いずれも特殊な場合を除いて連続縫合が行われている。縫合の原則は，血液が漏れないようにできるだけ針数を少なくすることと，正確に内膜と内膜があうように注意することである。
