A commercial and industrial city in western Indiana, USA. Population 57,000 (1990). It is located on the east bank of the Wabash River, on a plateau 18 meters above the water, and the city's name means "high ground" in French. Located in a fertile agricultural and coal-producing region, it produces a variety of industrial products and is important as a distribution center for corn, soybeans, wheat, and other crops. Founded in 1811, the town flourished as a junction for various routes to the Northwest Territory. It is also the location of the state university.
