A tall tree of the Myrtaceae family, native to tropical America. It is an important aromatic plant, especially cultivated in Jamaica. It has elliptical, leathery leaves 10-15 cm long, arranged in pairs, and small white flowers that grow in clusters in a well-branched inflorescence. It produces spherical drupes about 1 cm in diameter, which are picked while still immature and dried to extract the aromatic agent. The aromatic agent is allspice, which is widely used in cooking, such as in sauces and ketchup, and is an important export for Jamaica. Allspice oil, an essential oil, is also extracted from the leaves, and is also used as a flavoring and medicinal agent.
