A river in southwestern Switzerland and southeastern France. It is 813 km long and has a drainage area of about 100,000 ^km2 . It originates from the Rhône Glacier in the Alps, flows westward, passes through Lake Geneva, enters France, joins the Saône at Lyon, flows south, and empties into the Gulf of Lion in the Mediterranean. The Camargue low-lying delta has developed at its mouth. In addition to the Saône, its tributaries include the Isère, Drôme, and Durance. It has many rapids, making navigation difficult, but has an abundant water supply. Since 1934, development has been carried out mainly by the Rhône National Corporation, and irrigation and water transport have been improved, and the river now boasts the largest hydroelectric power generation in France.

スイス南西部，フランス南東部の川。全長813km。流域面積約10万km²。アルプスのローヌ氷河に発し西流，レマン湖を経てフランス領に入り，リヨンでソーヌ川と合して南流し，地中海のリオン湾に注ぐ。河口部にカマルグの低湿デルタが発達。支流はソーヌ川のほか，イゼール，ドローム，デュランスなど。急流が多く航行は不便だが，水量は豊富。1934年以来，ローヌ国営公社を中心に開発が進められ，灌漑(かんがい)，水運の整備が行われたほか，フランス最大の水力発電量を誇るようになった。
