A river in southwestern Switzerland and southeastern France. It is 813 km long and has a drainage area of about 100,000 km2 . It originates from the Rhône Glacier in the Alps, flows westward, passes through Lake Geneva, enters France, joins the Saône at Lyon, flows south, and empties into the Gulf of Lion in the Mediterranean. The Camargue low-lying delta has developed at its mouth. In addition to the Saône, its tributaries include the Isère, Drôme, and Durance. It has many rapids, making navigation difficult, but has an abundant water supply. Since 1934, development has been carried out mainly by the Rhône National Corporation, and irrigation and water transport have been improved, and the river now boasts the largest hydroelectric power generation in France. → Related article Saône River | France Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
