889‐961 The eighth amir of the Umayyad dynasty. Reigned from 912 to 961. For a time after ascending to the throne, he worked to unify the various powers within the country, and then he blocked the advance of Christian princes from the north, such as the King of Leon, into the south. In 929, he declared himself caliph and opposed the Fatimid dynasty, bringing most of the western Maghreb under the control of the Umayyad dynasty. While working to promote domestic industry, he also made Berber and Slavic military slaves, the Sakariba, the main force of the army, and brought the dynasty to its peak.
