A general term for a genus of cyanobacteria and blue-green algae. Morphologically, blue-green disc-shaped cells are connected in a row to form a filament, but they do not have a slime sheath. There are about 100 species in this genus, and some of them are named Oscillatory Moths because they exhibit gliding motion. In Japan, they are a widespread species that grow underwater and on the bottom of lakes, ponds, and ditches, as well as on coastal cliffs.
