...The Netherlands escaped German invasion, but the war caused difficulties for the national economy, including a reduction in maritime trade and shortages of daily necessities. In 1917, amid a growing sense of national unity during the war, the Cort van der Linden (1846-1935) government revised the constitution and resolved issues that had been pending since before the war, such as electoral reform (universal suffrage, proportional representation) and the school problem (full national funding for public and private schools). In 1919, the parliament passed social legislation, including women's suffrage (an eight-hour work day, lowering the age for receiving old-age pensions, etc.). After the war, the Dutch economy recovered quickly, but in the autumn of 1920, a crisis of overproduction and postwar inflation began, which lasted until 1924.
