There are cases of bronchial asthma in which the main symptom is difficulty breathing, just like in adults, but there is also asthma-like bronchitis, in which wheezing occurs when a child has a simple cold, or wheezing occurs when there is no illness, such as when the seasons change. Bronchial asthma is an allergic disease, and ephedrine, antihistamines, etc. are administered during attacks. In some cases, asthma-like bronchitis progresses to bronchial asthma if it recurs frequently, but in many cases it improves as the bronchi thicken with growth.

成人と同様に呼吸困難を主症状とする気管支喘息もあるが，単なる風邪の際に喘鳴（ゼイゼイいう音）を発したり，病気がないのに季節の変り目などに呼吸に喘鳴を伴う喘息様気管支炎も含まれる。気管支喘息はアレルギー性疾患であり，発作時にエフェドリン，抗ヒスタミン薬等を与える。喘息様気管支炎は，たびたび反復する場合は気管支喘息に移行する例もみられるが，多くは成長とともに気管支が太くなると軽快する。
