"Ursula's Legend"

…He produced a series of paintings on the Virgin Mary and the lives of saints, mainly for the Scuola (a kind of religious organization). The most important of these is the nine-piece series "The Life of Ursula" (1490-95). Influenced by Gentile Bellini, the series uses bright, soft light and rich colors on large, horizontal canvases, quietly unfolding the scenery and customs of the town at the time like a kaleidoscope, and carefully and simply telling the story of the saint. The simple style that runs through all of his works is somewhat different in style from the tradition of Venetian painting, which is rich in shadows, colorful, and gorgeous. …
