Sulfur mining

Other nonmetallic minerals that are produced in large quantities in Japan include silica sand (3.73 million tons), which is used as a raw material for glass and ceramics, silica stone (1.83 million tons), and dolomite (3.77 million tons), which is used in steelmaking furnaces. Sulfur mining once held a prominent position in Japan's nonmetallic mining industry, with major mines such as the Matsuo Mine in Iwate Prefecture. However, since the late 1960s, the country has produced a lot of sulfur recovered from oil desulfurization as a measure against pollution.
