Year of death: 4th year of Koan, 7th year of leap year, 13th day (August 28th, 1281) Year of birth: 1198 In the mid-Kamakura period, he was Dazai Shoni and Shugo of Chikuzen, Buzen, Hizen, Tsushima, and Iki provinces. Son of Muto Sukeyori. Buzen no Kami and Chikugo no Kami. When he was appointed Dazai Shoni, he changed his surname from Muto to Shoni. As the highest-ranking official of Dazaifu, a branch office of the Kamakura Shogunate, he dealt with Mongolian envoys, and during the Mongol invasion in Bun'ei 11 (1274), he led the Chinzei Gokenin (vassals of the shogunate) together with Otomo Yoritsune, and worked to defend the country. He also led the foreign patrols, and was wounded and killed during the Mongol battle in 1281 (4th year of Koan).
