Shoni Sukeyoshi

In the mid-Kamakura period, he was Dazai Shoni and Shugo of Chikuzen, Buzen, Hizen, Tsushima, and Iki provinces. Son of Muto Sukeyori. Buzen no Kami and Chikugo no Kami. When he was appointed Dazai Shoni, he changed his surname from Muto to Shoni. As the highest-ranking official of Dazaifu, a branch office of the Kamakura Shogunate, he dealt with Mongolian envoys, and during the Mongol invasion in Bun'ei 11 (1274), he led the Chinzei Gokenin (vassals of the shogunate) together with Otomo Yoritsune, and worked to defend the country. He also led the foreign patrols, and was wounded and killed during the Mongol battle in 1281 (4th year of Koan). 鎌倉中期,大宰少弐,筑前,豊前,肥前,対馬,壱岐国などの守護。武藤資頼の子。豊前守,筑後守。大宰少弐に就任したことから,それまでの武藤姓から少弐姓を名乗るようになった。鎌倉幕府の出先機関である大宰府の最高責任者として,モンゴル使節との対応に当たり,文永11(1274)年モンゴル襲来の際は大友頼泰と共に,鎮西御家人を率いて防戦に努めた。さらに異国警固番役を指揮し,弘安4(1281)年のモンゴル合戦中に負傷して死亡した。法名覚恵。<参考文献>川添昭二『中世九州史の研究』
