A right bank tributary of the Elbe River that flows through the North German Plain in northeastern Germany. Its total length is 341 km. It originates in the marshes near Neustrelitz in the Mecklenburg Lakes area and flows almost south to the western outskirts of Berlin. Here it joins the Spree River, flows west through the low marshes known as Havelland, and empties into the Elbe River. It is connected to many canals, including the Oder-Hafel Canal, the Lupin Canal, the Elbe-Hafel Canal, and the Rhin Canal, and is used for water transportation.
