A Portuguese prince, his father was King John I. He has been legendary as the man who made the greatest contribution to the development of new sea routes in Europe and the improvement of navigation techniques, but in recent years many of these claims have been refuted, and his reputation has been greatly shaken. In 1415, he led an expedition to Ceuta in North Africa, and thereafter served as governor of the Algarve, the closest region to Ceuta, and commander of the Order of Christ, and was involved in Portugal's overseas policy for a long time. He invited astronomers and mathematicians, and the navigators under his command promoted exploration of West Africa.
