Glasses picture - Glasses

Japanese:
Glasses picture - Glasses

A picture seen through convex lens glasses. There are two types: "nozokie" (peep picture), in which a picture is placed on one side of a box and a lens is placed on the other side to enlarge the picture, and "karakuri-e" (peep show) used in peep mechanisms. In the latter, the picture is placed on a flat surface and reflected on a mirror placed at a 45 degree angle above it, and the image on the mirror is then enlarged with a convex lens, so the picture is painted in reverse. In Europe, they were mainly made in Paris and Augsburg and became popular in the 18th century, but were introduced to Japan via China as early as the first half of the same century. The perspective representation drawn using the perspective method of Western painting was seen as unusual and became popular, and masters such as Maruyama Okyo and Shiba Kokan produced many spectacles pictures in the early period. A type of Western-style painting that became popular from the mid-Edo period onwards, ukiyo-e, which is a genre of ukiyo-e, is also thought to have been born under the influence of Chinese Qing dynasty eyeglass paintings.
