Opatosh, J.

...Influenced by these three great classical writers, many talented young writers emerged, and Yiddish literature enjoyed a golden age in Lithuania, Poland, and New York from the 1860s to the period before World War II. Notable figures in the field of novels included D. Pinski (1872-1959), who placed importance on the essence of Jewishness, S. Asch (1880-1957), who created works featuring a variety of characters, including villains, martyrs, and converts, IJ Singer (1893-1944), who wrote epic social novels and made a major contribution to the Yiddish theater world after his exile in the United States, and J. Opatos (1886-1954), who meticulously traced the moral collapse of the Jewish lower classes and the plight of the ethnic leadership at the time of the destruction of the Temple by Rome. In the theatrical field, Abraham Goldfaden (1840-1908) founded the first Yiddish theater for the general public in Romania in 1876. He wrote and directed a variety of plays, from light operas that satirized the superstitions and folly of ghetto life to Zionist-oriented historical dramas, thereby raising the level of entertainment and education for the masses.
