Kanuma soil

Japanese:
Kanuma soil

It is a weathered pumice stone from a volcanic eruption, and is distributed about 1 meter wide in a layer 2 to 3 meters below the volcanic ash soil mainly around Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, hence the name. It is said to have erupted from Mount Akagi tens of thousands of years ago. To be precise, it is weathered pumice stone, not soil. It is a soft, yellowish brown mass, porous, acidic soil with low nutrient absorption, but has a high water retention and good breathability. It has a large water capacity compared to ordinary soil, so once water is added, it retains water for several days, and the large gaps between the particles make it breathable. Kanuma soil is characterized by its excellent water retention and breathability, and is particularly used as a culture soil for potted garden plants such as bonsai. Kanuma soil can be used alone or mixed with other soils. It can be used alone for azaleas and azaleas. It is also suitable as soil for cuttings. Layers of floating rock deposits are found in many places outside the Kanuma region, including well-known examples such as "Bora," found around Sakurajima in southern Kyushu, and misotsuchi, found mainly in southern Nagano Prefecture.
