This was the organ newspaper of the Hunan Student Union during the May Fourth Movement in China. It was first published on July 14, 1919, and published five weekly issues, but was banned by the warlords in early August. Edited by Mao Zedong with the aim of raising the political consciousness of those who participated in the movement and encouraging ideological awareness, it also serialized his first political essay, "The Great Union of the People." Modelled on the Beijing Weekly Commentary, it was a four-page tabloid, used colloquial writing, and had a high theoretical standard. It is said to have had a circulation of 5,000.
