City God Temple (Cheng Huang Temple)

Japanese: 城隍廟 - じょうこうびょう（英語表記）Chéng huáng miào

A shrine dedicated to the City God, a god believed to protect cities and their inhabitants. Every city in old China had a City God shrine, and it was the one most closely connected to people's lives. There are many theories about the origins of City God worship, but it seems that worship was already practiced during the Three Kingdoms period. The following article is the oldest documented record that can be traced back to the city god. "The City God Temple is located in Chengliufang, east of the prefecture. It was first built in the second year of Chiwu (239) in the Wu era, and has been expanded by successive generations" (Taiping Prefecture Journal of Anhui Province).

城隍神をまつるやしろ。城隍神は都市とその住民を守護すると信じられた神。旧中国の各都市にはかならずもうけられ，人々の暮しと最も密接なかかわりをもっていた廟である。城隍神崇拝の起源については諸説があってよくわからぬが，三国時代にはすでに信仰されていたらしい。次の記事は，文献的にさかのぼりうる最も古い記録である。〈城隍廟，府治の東の承流坊にあり。呉の赤烏2年(239)創建，歴代増修さる〉(《安徽省太平府志》)。
