During the Edo period, this was a type of commercial organization that assisted wholesale merchants in purchasing goods in production areas. They were seen in those dealing in textile products and related raw materials such as silk, raw silk, cotton, ginned cotton, hemp, and safflower. A typical example was when Echigoya (Mitsui), Daimaru (Shimomura), and Shirokiya (Omura) appointed local merchants and set up silk purchasing inns in Fujioka, Kozuke. The inns were designated by contract. The role of the inns was to accommodate the staff sent by wholesale merchants on purchasing trips, to temporarily store the goods received, to supervise the staff who were sent out, and to purchase and send back the goods on their behalf, and their income was in the form of fees or commission for these.
