…the American black drummer who contributed most to the development of modern jazz drumming. Born in North Carolina. Known by the nickname “Max.” He participated in the new jazz movement that was emerging in New York, and honed his skills by playing with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. With his excellent sense of rhythm and technique, he had already joined the ranks of first-class musicians by 1945, and in 1954, he formed a quintet with trumpeter Clifford Brown (1930-56), which was one of the best combos of the 1950s. …
