Born: June 14, 1868 in Vienna Died June 26, 1943. New York Austrian pathologist. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna in 1891. Professor of Pathology at the same university from 1909 to 1919. Travelled to the Netherlands in 1819, and three years later moved to New York as a researcher at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. In 2001, while conducting research at the Department of Pathology at the University of Vienna, he discovered the ABO blood group system. This led to the development of blood cross-matching tests, making blood transfusions safer. He also made significant contributions to research in forensic medicine and human genetics. In 1940, he discovered the Rh factor in the Rh blood group system, and after studying the pathogenic virus of polio, he succeeded in transmitting the disease to monkeys. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.
