This refers to the branch of medicine that treats and studies diseases of the internal organs related to digestion and absorption. It is also called gastroenterology, a name that is still widely used in Europe and the United States today. In Japan, the first specialized hospital was the Gastroenterological Hospital, which opened in Tokyo in 1896, and Natsume Soseki, who suffered from stomach ulcers, was also hospitalized there. The Gastroenterological Research Society, founded in 1898 by Nagayo Shokichi (1866-1910), the director of the hospital, was renamed the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology in 1902, and was renamed the Japanese Gastroenterological Association after World War II.
