Colorful clouds

This phenomenon occurs when parts of cirrocumulus, cirrostratus, and altocumulus clouds appear to shine faintly like a rainbow. It occurs when the clouds are at a specific angle from the line connecting the eye to the sun. It is thought to occur when the cloud particles are supercooled water droplets or ice crystals. However, even though it is the same diffraction phenomenon of sunlight, the mechanisms are thought to be different for water droplets and ice crystals. It is called zuiun, keiun, shiun, etc., and in some regions it is considered an auspicious phenomenon.

巻積雲(けんせきうん)、巻層雲、高積雲の一部が虹(にじ)のように淡く輝いて見える現象。目と太陽を結ぶ線から特定の角度に雲がある場合に生じる。雲粒が過冷却水滴である場合も、また氷晶である場合も生じると考えられている。しかし、同じ太陽光線の回折現象であっても、水滴と氷晶ではメカニズムは異なると思われる。瑞雲(ずいうん)、景雲、紫雲(しうん)などとよばれ、縁起のよい現象とみる地方もある。
