'Ammān

Japanese: アンマーン(英語表記)‘Ammān
'Ammān
The capital of Jordan, located in northwestern Jordan. Population 972,000 (1986). It is located on a plateau about 75 km east of the Jordan River, at an altitude of about 720 m. It is connected by rail to Damascus and Beirut in the north, and Ma'an in the south. The name Amman comes from Rabat Ammon, a city founded by the descendants of Ammon in the Bible. During the Hellenistic period, it was renamed Philadelphia, and the name was later used during the Roman and Byzantine periods. After the collapse of the Byzantine Empire in the 7th century, the ancient name was revived, but it subsequently fell into decline, and by the 14th century, it is recorded that only ruins remained.
