1823‐1917 Prime Minister of Canada. In office 1894-96. Conservative Party member. Born in England, he emigrated to Upper Canada at age 10. After working in the printing industry, he entered politics in 1867 when he was elected to the House of Commons. He represented a strongly pro-British Protestant group known as the Orange Order. He served as a minister in the Conservative government led by JA MacDonald, JJC Abbott, and JSD Thompson before becoming Prime Minister.
