An Irish nationalist organization. Its official name is the Society of United Irishmen. It was founded in Belfast and Dublin in 1791 under the leadership of T. W. Tone, who called for the unity of Protestants and Catholics as Irishmen. Its members were mostly Presbyterians and other Protestants, as well as middle-class liberals, and the Society discussed issues such as parliamentary reform and the restoration of Catholic rights.
