1882‐1964 German scholar of Islamic art history. Studied art history and archaeology at the universities of Paris, Vienna, Munich, and Heidelberg. Served as head of the Islamic department at the State Museum of Berlin, professor at Humboldt University, and president of the German Society for Oriental Studies. Directed excavations at Ctesiphon, the capital of Sassanid Persia, in 1928-29 and 1931-32. A pioneer in the history of Islamic art and crafts, his books include "Miniatures of the Islamic East" (1922), "Islamic Crafts" (1925), and "Islamic Art" (1962).
