Julius Caesar

A Roman historical drama by the English playwright Shakespeare, first performed around 1599. It is based on Plutarch's Lives, translated by T. North. Taking advantage of the nobles' resentment towards Caesar, who is ambitious for the throne, Cassius plots against him, and the noble Brutus joins in for the freedom of his country. After the assassination is successful, Antony is allowed to give a funeral speech for Caesar, and with his skillful oratory he incites the people to rise up against the conspirators.

イギリスの劇作家シェークスピアのローマ史劇。1599年ごろ初演。T.ノース訳のプルタルコス《英雄伝》に題材を得ている。王位への野心を抱くシーザー(カエサル)に対する貴族たちの反感を利用して，キャシアス(カッシウス)は彼への陰謀をたくらみ，高潔なブルータス(ブルトゥス)も祖国の自由のためにそれに加わる。暗殺が成功したあと，シーザーの追悼演説を許されたアントニー(アントニウス)は巧妙な弁舌で民衆を扇動して，共謀者への反抗に立ち上がらせる。
